How to eat healthy?

Eating healthy is one of the keys to better overall health; if you eat better and exercise more, you will reap both mental and physical benefits. Making dietary changes is a big step, however, so we've tried to shorten the list somewhat. You can begin eating healthy by adding variety to your diet. A balanced eating plan should include the following:

  • Fresh vegetables and fruits
  • Lean meat/skinless poultry
  • Beans
  • Nuts and seeds in limited quantities
  • Whole grain pastas and breads
  • Low fat dairy items
  • Whole grain cereals

A sensible eating plan begins with a healthy breakfast. Don't think about the foods that are now "forbidden", think about all the delicious and healthy foods you can eat. The more colorful your breakfast plate is, the more weight you will lose- add plenty of fruits to your morning meal.

As with other things, moderation is key. Even when eating healthy foods, you must still be aware of the amount you eat. Most of us eat more than we need, and part of learning to eat healthy is learning how much your body needs and not eating more than that. Don't go back for additional helpings, and only eat half of a restaurant meal. Read food labels to know serving sizes, and be mindful of what's going on your plate.

Be sure to drink plenty of water. Proper hydration is essential for cleansing your body of toxins, and it is also essential in other bodily functions. If you are a soda drinker, choose water instead. Drinking enough water will flush away some of the excess salt we eat; to be healthier, cut down on salt and season your food instead with spices and herbs.

If you feel fine, you may wonder why you should eat healthy. The answer is simple- the saturated fats and sodium in most modern food can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. There are many benefits to eating healthy, such as increased energy and lower weight- but they go beyond that. Learning to eat healthy foods in moderation can not only make you look better, but it can make you feel better and live longer.
