Is only organic food healthy?

They were once found solely in health food stores, but now organic food can be found in almost any supermarket. That has created some controversy, and begs the question, "Is only organic food healthy?" Here, we provide answers to some questions surrounding organic food, which will hopefully help you make a more informed decision.

The term "organic" refers to the way agricultural products like fruits and veggies, dairy, meat and grains are grown and processed. Organic farming is meant to encourage conservation and cut down on pollution; those that farm organically don't use fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, they spread manure and mulch to keep weeds and pests at bay.

Fullly organic foods such as eggs, fruits and vegetables can be labeled as 100% organic, but foods that have more than one ingredient can use wording such as "100% organic", or just plain "organic". A food containing at least seventy percent organic ingredients can legally say "made with organic ingredients" on the label, but cannot use any special seals. Foods with fewer than seventy percent organic ingredients cannot make claims on their packaging, but can list the organic ingredients. Organic and natural are two different things- you may see terms like "all natural", "free range", or "hormone free" on food labels. The description has to be honest, but should not be confused with the word "organic".

Is organic food more healthy? No one really knows just yet. A study recently examined the last five decades' worth of comparisons between conventional and organic foods, and research concluded that the nutritional content of each was almost the same. Many factors convince people to go organic; some choose it because they like the taste, but others go organic because of the lack of pesticides, additives, and the benefits to the environment.

One of the biggest drawbacks of organic food is the cost. Most organic food costs more than its conventional counterpart, due mostly to organic farming's more complex practices. Because organic fruits aren't treated with pesticides and waxes, they typically spoil faster, and look not-so-perfect.

It remains to be seen whether only organic food is healthy. However, one thing is for certain- whether the fruits and vegetables you eat are organic or not, including more in your diet is a sure path to better health.
